Ghent University is a top 100 university, founded in 1817, and one of the major Belgian universities counting over 47,000 students and 15,000 employees. Ghent University is ranked 66st in the International Shanghai ranking. The 11 faculties are composed of 117 faculty departments and offer more than 230 high-quality courses in every one of their scientific disciplines, each inspired by innovative research. Following the spirit of Leo Baekeland, polymer science and engineering is still one of the major research directions at Ghent University.
The University has participated in more than 600 EU research projects, of which > 50 ERC grants and > 40 Marie Curie Sklodowska Fellowships. Ghent University coordinated >50 international projects. The university provides excellent training opportunities to both young and experienced researchers and award every year > 700 PhD degrees of which over 30% went to international young researchers. The university is one of the fastest growing European universities in terms of research capacity and productivity, and its commitment to European research excellence is reflected by the extension of the ‘European Office’ in its Research Office, i.e. department overseeing, guiding and administering research projects.
Our credo is ‘Dare to Think’, challenging everyone to question conventional views and to dare to take a nuanced stand. We are a pluralistic university open to all, regardless of their ideological, political, cultural or social background. Ghent University Global Campus is also the first European university in Songdo, South Korea.
